Scientific Domain 1:

Theory of Data and Simulation Science

Is it possible to learn from data? Why is big beautiful? Can simulations replace experiments? Which numerical methods and algorithms generate answers in finite time? Why is algorithm A better than algorithm B? What is the meaning of better? Why could the answer change, when the algorithm is run on a modern large scale super computer with a million MPI ranks? Why is it good that there are so many computer gamers across the countries? How to implement an algorithm on a GPU? Is it possible to predict if the prediction is accurate?

These and many more questions are in the center of the Scientific Domain 1: Theory of Data and Simulation Science. Correct answers can only be formulated when carefully researching the underlying mathematical and computer science aspects, while maintaining a close interplay with the domain sciences.
